The Corner Lot Companies is proud to host their 2nd annual charity golf tournament to benefit Blessings in a BackpackBlessings in a Backpack provides elementary schoolchildren who are on the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal Program with a backpack of food to take home for 38 weekends during the school year. The consequences of hunger are much more than a growling stomach. Poor nutrition can result in a weaker immune system, increased hospitalization, lower IQ, shorter attention spans, and lower academic achievement. $100 feeds one child on the weekends for one 38 week school year through the Blessings in a Backpack program. 100% of money raised to fund a school goes to feeding that school. Students who participate in the Blessings in a Backpack program show marked improvement in school attendance, test scores, behavior, and health. Food is an essential building block, and in this case truly is a blessing, especially to a hungry child! In 2014, the funds raised by our tournament completely funded the Hendricks Avenue and Mayport Elementary school programs. This year we fully anticipate another sell out event and have increased our fundraising goal to $60,000 – but we need your help!

The Blessings in a Backpack Mission

  • Blessings in a Backpack partners with America to ensure impoverished elementary school children are fed on the weekends throughout the school year
  • Blessings in a Backpack is a results-oriented program designed to feed elementary school children who qualify for the free and reduced meal program and may not have any or enough food during their weekends
  • Every Friday, students receive a backpack filled with food to bring home
  • The children return with their empty backpacks on Monday, fed and ready to learn. The process is then repeated every Friday through the school year

Facts about Duval County

  • Over 52% of children in Duval County public schools are on the free and reduced meal program and the numbers are increasing
  • Blessings in a Backpack currently feeds 2,000 students per week at seven area schools
  • In conjunction with Publix, our local grocery partner, it costs only $80 to feed a child for the entire 38 week school year
